AideRSS Widgets on Mac Dashboard

Jevon MacDonald from StartupNorth sent us a hot tip earlier today. The new ‘Web Clips’ widget for the Mac allows you to capture the top stories from your favorite blog in just a few clicks.

To get started, simply enter the URL of the blog you would like to ‘widgetize’ into the AideRSS search bar. Then, nagivate to the widgets section and grab the code snippet with Web Clips. Can’t get much easier. Now we just need Yahoo widgets to step up to the plate!

AideRSS at Toronto DemoCamp

Wow, what a turnout and an amazing milestone for the DemoCamp initiative last night! Kevin and myself shared the stage with a number of local startups and open source projects while presenting to an overflowing room at the Toronto Board of Trade. Kudos to the organizers for pulling together another amazing venue.

Kevin presented a brief overview of AideRSS and I gave a first sneak peek of our new and up-and-coming recommendations engine. We’re hoping to go live with this feature in the course of the next few upcoming weeks, and it should be an exciting milestone! We will provide dynamic and personalized feed recommendations based on your RSS feed subscriptions, and also enable you to identify and explore new and similar blogs with respect to any particular feed.

As well, we’ve had an amazing number of people approach us with great feedback and feature suggestions - thank you for all the support! I’m looking forward to the next DemoCamp already.

Several coffee pots and one productive weekend later, we’re happy to roll out an entire suite of updates to our codebase:

RDF (RSS 1.0) support

xml:base and relative URI support

  • Daniel Aleksandersen gave us the lead on this one. Some Atom and RSS 1.0 feeds use xml:base to set the base URI for all internal links, and we’re happy to say that AideRSS will now properly handle these cases.

Other:

  • Improved XML detection & recovery for malformed feeds.
  • Faster & more frequent feed updates across the entire site.

Earlier today we released an entire batch of the most requested for features and additions to our site! The credit goes to everyone who has sent us feedback and offered us their invaluable advice. Curious as to what it is? Let’s take a look.

RSS subscribe chickletsFaster RSS subscriptions
We’ve updated all the pages on our site to allow you to quickly add and subscribe to RSS feeds in your favorite online reader. Simply hover your mouse over the subscribe button on any digest page, and you will be greeted with a selection of the most popular online readers. One click subscriptions, sweet!

Batch/Mass filtering level editing
You can now alter, or delete any number of feeds in your ‘My Feeds’ section with a single action - managing your saved feeds is now so much easier! If you want to adjust the filtering level preferences, or remove redundant RSS feeds, navigate to your ‘My Feeds’ section, and select ‘Edit & Delete filtering preferences’.

Russian & European encoding support
We are rolling out a whole set of updates on our back end to add and extend our support for non UTF-8 encoded RSS feeds. This will not be immediately visible, but all new stories with non-traditional encodings will now be handled much, much better.

Other updates:

  • Password recovery
  • UI enhancements & CSS fixes for Safari
  • Added Google Blogsearch as a new data source
